Flood Cover Car Insurance Malaysia

Does your car insurance cover flood damage? Learn about Special Perils add-on, how much it costs, and why it is essential for Malaysian drivers during monsoon season.

Important: Standard Insurance Does NOT Cover Floods

Standard comprehensive car insurance in Malaysia does not include flood, landslide, or storm damage. You must add a Special Perils add-on to your policy. Without it, flood damage is entirely your own financial responsibility — repairs can cost RM 10,000 to RM 50,000+.

What Is Special Perils (Flood Cover)?

Special Perils is an optional add-on that extends your car insurance to cover damage caused by natural disasters. In Malaysia, it is commonly called "flood cover" because flooding is the most frequent and costly natural disaster affecting vehicles.

Without Special Perils, your comprehensive car insurance will cover accidents, theft, and fire — but not floods, landslides, or storms. Adding this cover is one of the most important decisions for Malaysian car owners.

Fact: Malaysia experiences significant flooding every year. During the 2021-2022 monsoon season, over 70,000 vehicles were damaged by floods. Most of those without Special Perils had to pay out of pocket.

What Does Flood Cover Protect?

  • Flood damage to engine and electrical systems
  • Landslide and mudslide damage
  • Storm and typhoon damage
  • Earthquake damage
  • Fallen trees and debris damage
  • Water damage to interior and upholstery
  • Damage from driving through flooded roads

Not covered: Damage caused by intentionally driving into deep flood water, pre-existing damage, and wear and tear. Some insurers may exclude damage from acts of negligence.
