NCD Guide

No Claim Discount (NCD) in Malaysia

NCD is a discount on your car insurance premium for every claim-free year. The longer you go without claiming, the more you save.

NCD is transferable

When you switch insurers, your NCD can be transferred. You do not lose your discount when changing insurance companies.

One claim resets your NCD

If you make a claim, your NCD resets to 0% in the next renewal. This is why minor damages are often worth paying out of pocket.

Maximum NCD is 55%

After 5 or more consecutive claim-free years, you reach the maximum NCD of 55%, saving you more than half of your base premium.

The maximum NCD (No Claim Discount) for private cars in Malaysia is 55%, achieved after 5 or more consecutive claim-free years. NCD is transferable between insurers when you switch your car insurance policy.

Yes, since 1 March 2024, car insurance in Malaysia is subject to 8% service tax (ST) on the premium. This is automatically added to your total payable amount. The stamp duty is a fixed RM10.

Windscreen cover is an add-on that protects your car's windscreen and windows against cracks, chips, or shattering from flying debris, stones, or accidents. Without this add-on, windscreen damage is typically not covered under standard comprehensive insurance.

Choose Comprehensive if your car is under 10 years old, has a loan, or is worth more than RM 30,000. Choose Third Party Fire & Theft for cars aged 10-15 years. Choose Third Party Only for very old cars (15+ years) with low market value or if you want the cheapest legal minimum.

Each insurer also has their own risk assessment model.

Car Insurance Guide

Understanding Car Insurance in Malaysia

A complete guide to car insurance premiums, NCD, coverage types, and how to get the best deal for your vehicle.

What is NCD (No Claim Discount)?

NCD, or No Claim Discount, is one of the most important factors in determining your car insurance premium in Malaysia. It is a reward from insurers for not making any claims during your policy year. The longer you go without claiming, the higher your discount — and the lower your premium.

In Malaysia, NCD starts at 0% for new policies or after a claim. Each claim-free year increases your NCD by 10%, up to a maximum of 55% after 5 or more claim-free years. This means a driver with 55% NCD could pay less than half the premium of a new driver with 0% NCD.

One important thing to know: NCD is transferable between insurers. If you switch from one insurance company to another, your NCD stays with you. You do not lose it when you change insurers. This is why shopping around at renewal time is so important — you can take your NCD discount to any insurer.

However, if you make a claim, your NCD resets to 0% (or drops by 30%, depending on the insurer and claim type). This is why many drivers consider paying for small repairs out of pocket rather than making a claim that would reset their NCD.

Types of Car Insurance Coverage in Malaysia

There are three main types of car insurance in Malaysia: Comprehensive, Third Party Fire & Theft, and Third Party Only. Choosing the right one depends on your car's age, value, and whether you still have a bank loan.

Comprehensive coverage is the most popular and offers the widest protection. It covers your own vehicle damage from accidents, theft, fire, natural disasters, and third-party liability. Most banks require comprehensive coverage for cars with outstanding loans. If your car is under 10 years old or worth more than RM 30,000, comprehensive is usually the best choice.

Third Party Fire & Theft covers damage you cause to others, plus fire and theft of your own vehicle. It does not cover accident damage to your own car. This is a good middle-ground option for older cars (10-15 years) that still have moderate value.

Third Party Only is the minimum legal requirement in Malaysia. It only covers damage you cause to other vehicles or people. It does not cover any damage to your own car. This is suitable for very old cars (15+ years) with low market value.

Use our calculator above to see how each coverage type affects your estimated premium. The difference between comprehensive and third-party only can be thousands of ringgit per year.

Car Insurance Add-ons Explained

Add-ons are optional extras that extend your coverage beyond the basic policy. In Malaysia, the most popular add-ons include windscreen coverage, flood or special perils coverage, personal accident protection, and towing assistance.

Windscreen coverage is one of the most claimed add-ons. It covers the cost of replacing or repairing your windscreen without affecting your NCD. A replacement windscreen can cost RM 800 - 3,000 depending on your car model, so this add-on is highly recommended.

Flood / Special Perils covers damage from floods, landslides, storms, and other natural disasters. Malaysia experiences heavy rainfall and flash floods, especially in the Klang Valley, Penang, and Johor. This add-on is essential for cars parked in flood-prone areas.

Personal Accident (PA) coverage provides a lump sum payment if you are injured or killed in an accident while driving. It typically covers the driver and sometimes passengers. Premiums are low — usually RM 50 - 150 per year.

Other add-ons include key replacement (for lost or stolen keys), loss of use (covers car rental while your vehicle is being repaired), and towing & roadside assistance for breakdowns and accidents.

How to Save Money on Car Insurance in Malaysia

There are several ways to reduce your car insurance premium without sacrificing coverage. The most effective is maintaining your NCD — driving safely and avoiding claims for as many years as possible can save you up to 55% on your premium.

Another tip is to shop around at every renewal. Since car insurance was liberalised in 2017, each insurer sets its own rates. The same car and driver profile can get quotes that differ by 20-40% between insurers. Use our calculator to estimate, then request quotes from multiple agents.

Consider your add-ons carefully. While windscreen and flood coverage are recommended, other add-ons like loss of use or key replacement may not be necessary for everyone. Only add what you actually need.

If your car is older than 10 years and fully paid off, consider whether comprehensive coverage is still worth it. You could save significantly by switching to Third Party Fire & Theft. However, if your car is still under a bank loan, the bank will require comprehensive coverage.

Finally, consider bundling your car insurance with your home or life insurance if you have them. Some insurers offer multi-policy discounts. And always renew on time — letting your insurance lapse can result in losing your NCD if you have an accident during the gap.
