Yes, fully electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia enjoy road tax exemption until 31 December 2025 under the current government incentive. After 2025, a new EV road tax structure based on motor output (kW) will apply.
The proposed EV road tax structure ranges from RM 20 (for EVs under 80kW output) to RM 2,399 (for EVs above 350kW). Most popular EVs like BYD Atto 3 and Tesla Model 3 Standard Range would fall in the RM 120-350 range.
All fully electric vehicles (BEVs) registered in Malaysia are exempt from road tax. This includes Tesla, BYD, Hyundai Ioniq, BMW i-series, Mercedes EQ series, and all other 100% electric vehicles. Hybrid vehicles are NOT exempt.
Yes, car insurance is mandatory regardless of road tax status. EV insurance works the same as conventional car insurance — comprehensive, TPFT, or TPO. EV insurance rates are still developing in Malaysia.
