How Windscreen Insurance Works
In Malaysia, standard comprehensive car insurance does NOT cover windscreen or window glass damage. You need a separate windscreen add-on to your policy. Windscreen cover pays for repair/replacement of:
- Front windscreen
- Rear windscreen
- Side windows (all four doors)
- Sunroof (check with insurer)
Estimated costs by car category:
| Car Type | Example | Windscreen Add-on | Replacement Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perodua/Proton | Myvi, Axia, Saga | RM 60-80 | RM 800-1,200 |
| Japanese B-segment | Vios, City, Mazda 2 | RM 70-100 | RM 1,200-2,000 |
| Japanese C/D-segment | Civic, Accord, CX-5 | RM 80-120 | RM 2,000-3,500 |
| Luxury/EV | Tesla, BMW, Mercedes | RM 100-150 | RM 3,000-6,000+ |

What is windscreen insurance?
Windscreen insurance is an add-on to your car insurance that covers the cost of repairing or replacing your windscreen, side windows, and rear window. Without it, windscreen damage is typically not covered under standard comprehensive insurance.
How much does windscreen insurance cost in Malaysia?
Windscreen cover typically costs RM 60-130 per year depending on your car model. High-end cars with larger or more expensive windscreens cost more. The premium is added to your main insurance policy.
Does windscreen insurance cover sunroof and side windows?
Most windscreen add-ons cover all glass on the vehicle: front windscreen, rear windscreen, side windows, and sunroof. Confirm this with your insurer before purchasing.
Will claiming windscreen affect my NCD?
Windscreen claims generally do NOT affect your NCD (No Claim Discount). This is one of the main benefits — you can replace a damaged windscreen without losing your accumulated discount.
Is there a limit to windscreen claims?
Most insurers allow one windscreen claim per policy year. The claim amount is typically capped at RM 1,000-3,000 depending on the insurer and your car model.
Should I get windscreen cover for a new car?
Yes. New car windscreens (especially for Perodua, Proton, and imported models) can cost RM 800-3,000+ to replace. For RM 60-120/year, it's one of the most cost-effective add-ons.
