10 Car Insurance Tips Every Malaysian Driver Should Know in 2026

May 28, 20266 min read

Car insurance in Malaysia does not have to be confusing or expensive. With the right knowledge and a few smart moves, you can save hundreds — sometimes thousands — of ringgit every year. Here are the 10 tips every Malaysian driver should know.

1. Maintain Your NCD at All Costs

Your NCD is your biggest money-saver. A 55% NCD can cut your premium by more than half. Avoid small claims — if a repair costs RM 500 but claiming would cost you RM 1,000+ in lost NCD over the next few years, pay out of pocket.

2. Shop Around at Every Renewal

Since car insurance was liberalised in 2017, each insurer sets their own rates. The same car and driver can get quotes differing by 20-40% between insurers. Use Motoo's calculator to estimate, then request quotes from multiple agents.

3. Choose the Right Coverage Type

Comprehensive is best for cars under 10 years old or with outstanding loans. Third Party Fire & Theft works well for 10-15 year old cars. Third Party Only suits cars over 15 years with low market value. Do not over-insure or under-insure.

4. Add Windscreen Cover

Windscreen claims do not affect NCD. A replacement windscreen costs RM 800-3,000 depending on your car model, while windscreen cover costs as little as RM 75-150 per year. This is almost always worth it.

5. Consider Flood Cover If You Are in a Risk Area

Malaysia experiences frequent flash floods. If you park in a flood-prone area in KL, Penang, or Johor, flood cover (special perils) is essential. It costs about 0.3% of your sum insured.

6. Increase Your Excess (Deductible)

A higher excess means lower premiums. If you are a safe driver with high NCD, you can opt for a higher excess to reduce your annual premium. Just ensure you can afford the excess if you do need to claim.

7. Renew on Time

Letting your insurance lapse is risky. If you have an accident during the gap, you are personally liable for all damages. Plus, you risk losing your NCD. Set a reminder 2 weeks before expiry.

8. Bundle with Road Tax Renewal

Many insurers offer combined insurance and road tax renewal. This is often more convenient and may come with small discounts. Use our road tax calculator to estimate both costs together.

9. Check Your Sum Insured

The sum insured should reflect your car's current market value, not the price you paid. Cars depreciate quickly — a 5-year-old Myvi is worth far less than a new one. Over-insuring means paying for coverage you can never claim.

10. Use Motoo's Free Calculators

Before every renewal, use our free calculators to estimate your premium, NCD savings, and road tax. Knowledge is power — knowing your expected costs helps you negotiate better with agents.
