Windscreen Insurance Malaysia: Costs, Claims & Is It Worth It?

February 18, 20266 min read

Windscreen insurance is one of the most popular add-ons for car insurance in Malaysia — and for good reason. A cracked or shattered windscreen is surprisingly common, and replacement costs can be shocking without coverage.

What is Windscreen Cover?

Windscreen cover is an add-on that protects your windshield, side windows, and sunroof from damage. You choose a cover amount (typically RM 500, RM 1,000, or RM 1,500) and the premium is 15% of that cover amount. So RM 1,000 windscreen cover costs RM 150 per year.

Windscreen Replacement Costs by Car Model

Car ModelEstimated Replacement CostRecommended Cover
Perodua MyviRM 800 - 1,200RM 1,000
Perodua AxiaRM 600 - 900RM 1,000
Toyota ViosRM 1,200 - 1,800RM 1,500
Honda CityRM 1,500 - 2,200RM 1,500
Proton X50RM 1,800 - 2,500RM 1,500
BMW 3 SeriesRM 3,000 - 6,000RM 1,500

Note: For luxury cars, RM 1,500 cover may not fully cover replacement. Some insurers offer higher windscreen cover amounts.

Why Windscreen Cover is Almost Always Worth It

Does Not Affect NCD

Windscreen claims do not reset your No Claim Discount. This alone makes it worth the small premium.

Tiny Premium, Big Protection

RM 150/year for RM 1,000 cover vs RM 1,200+ for a replacement. The math is clear.

Malaysian Roads Are Tough on Windscreens

Gravel, construction debris, and highway stones make windscreen damage very common on Malaysian roads.

How to Make a Windscreen Claim

  1. Contact your insurer or agent immediately after the damage occurs
  2. Take photos of the damage
  3. Your insurer will direct you to an approved windscreen workshop
  4. The workshop replaces the windscreen — you pay only the excess (if any)
  5. Your NCD remains unaffected
