Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about car insurance in Malaysia.
The calculator provides an estimated premium range based on your vehicle details, engine capacity, coverage type, and NCD. Final premiums depend on the insurer's underwriting, your claims history, and vehicle condition. For an accurate quote, submit your details and our team will check with multiple insurers.
NCD (No Claim Discount) is a discount on your car insurance premium for every claim-free year. In Malaysia, NCD starts at 0% and increases by 10% each year up to a maximum of 55% (after 5+ claim-free years). A higher NCD means a lower premium. NCD is transferable between insurers.
Motoo is an independent car insurance comparison platform, not an insurer. We help you compare and calculate estimated premiums, then connect you with licensed insurance agents and partners who can provide official quotes and handle your purchase. All final policies are issued by regulated insurance companies.
There are three main types: (1) Comprehensive — covers own damage, theft, fire, and third-party; (2) Third Party Fire & Theft — covers third-party liability plus fire and theft of your vehicle; (3) Third Party Only — minimum legal requirement, covers only damage to others. The best choice depends on your car's age and value.
Road tax is calculated based on engine capacity (CC), vehicle type, and fuel type. Petrol vehicles pay less than diesel. Private cars have different rates than commercial vehicles. The JPJ road tax formula is: Base rate + (CC × rate per CC). Use our road tax calculator for an exact estimate.
Common add-ons include: windscreen coverage, flood / special perils, personal accident (PA), towing and roadside assistance, key replacement, loss of use (courtesy car), and legal liability of passengers. Add-ons increase your premium but provide valuable extra protection.
You should renew your car insurance before the expiry date. Most insurers allow renewal up to 60 days before expiry. Driving without valid insurance is illegal in Malaysia and can result in fines up to RM 1,000. Use our calculator to plan ahead and get the best deal.
To get a quote, you'll need: car registration number, vehicle make and model, year of manufacture, engine capacity (CC), current market value, current insurer and expiry date, NCD percentage, and your preferred coverage type. Some insurers may also ask for your driving experience and claims history.
Takaful car insurance follows Islamic principles of mutual cooperation and risk-sharing. Unlike conventional insurance, takaful operates on a cooperative model where participants contribute to a shared pool. The coverage benefits are similar, but the contract structure and investment approach comply with Shariah principles.
